About the Department
The Department of Entomology at Rashtriya Kisan (P.G.) College, Shamli focuses on imparting quality education and research in the field of agricultural entomology. The department offers Undergraduate and Ph.D. programme, covering insect biology, pest management, biological control and integrated pest management (IPM).
With experienced faculty and practical-based learning, the department equips students with skills to identify insect pests and develop eco-friendly and sustainable pest control strategies. Emphasis is laid on field studies, laboratory work and research to address real-world agricultural challenges and enhance crop protection.
Program Outcomes (POs) B.Sc. (Ag) Department of Entomology
After completion of the B.Sc. Agriculture programme, students specializing in Entomology will be able to:
PSO–1: Insect Identification and Classification 🐜
Students will be able to identify economically important insect pests and beneficial insects associated with agricultural crops, classify insects up to the order and family level based on their morphological characteristics, recognize various insect damage symptoms and accurately relate them to specific pest species, and apply appropriate taxonomic tools and identification keys for systematic and precise insect identification.
PSO–2: Pest Biology and Ecology 🌱
Students will be able to understand the biology, life cycle, and seasonal occurrence of insect pests, analyze insect ecology and population dynamics within agro-ecosystems, study the interactions among pests, hosts, and environmental factors that influence pest outbreaks, and apply ecological principles to predict pest incidence and population trends.
PSO–3: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Strategies 🧪
Students will be able to design and implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies by integrating cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical control methods, apply Economic Threshold Level (ETL) concepts to make effective pest control decisions, and promote sustainable and environmentally safe pest management practices in agricultural systems.
PSO–4: Safe and Judicious Use of Pesticides ⚗️
Students will be able to understand the classification, formulation, and mode of action of pesticides, apply pesticides safely using recommended equipment and appropriate techniques, manage pesticide resistance effectively while minimizing environmental contamination, and follow standard safety procedures in the storage, handling, and disposal of pesticides.
PSO–5: Biological Control and Beneficial Insects 🐞
Students will be able to identify natural enemies such as predators, parasitoids, and pathogens, apply biological control methods effectively in pest management programs, promote the conservation of beneficial insects within agro-ecosystems, and implement mass production techniques for the effective utilization of biological control agents.
PSO–6: Pest Surveillance and Forecasting 📊
Students will be able to conduct pest surveillance using scientific sampling methods, utilize traps and other monitoring tools for effective pest detection, analyze pest population data to forecast potential pest outbreaks, and prepare appropriate pest management advisories based on surveillance findings.
PSO–7: Management of Pests in Major Crops 🌾
Students will be able to identify major insect pests affecting cereals, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, sugarcane, fruits, and vegetables, recommend suitable crop-specific pest management practices, develop effective pest management schedules for major crops, and apply crop-based Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies under field conditions.
PSO–8: Application of Entomology in Allied Fields 🐝
Students will be able to apply entomological knowledge in areas such as apiculture, sericulture, and stored product protection, understand the medical and veterinary importance of insects, manage honey bee colonies effectively for pollination and honey production, and apply appropriate insect management practices in storage systems and public health sectors.
